What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a form of manual treatment that manipulates and strengthens the body’s framework. Osteopaths recognise the link between joints, muscles, circulation, tissues, and internal organs, and how they must function together.
At Whole Body Osteopathy, we understand the role that each part of your body must play to maintain your wellbeing. Our qualified and experienced Osteopaths can detect, treat, and prevent health problems so you can live pain-free.
What do Osteopaths do?
Osteopaths use a variety of techniques to help correct abnormal physical conditions which include back and neck pain, headache, physical injuries to bones, joints and muscles, and many other physical and functional disorders.
A wide variety of treatment techniques are used, which could include manipulation and mobilisation to joints and soft tissues, muscle energy stretches and cranial-sacral therapy. The Osteopath will use appropriate treatment, after fully assessing the patient.
Osteopathy is complementary therapy that is used alongside conventional treatment. Osteopaths are front line health professionals and work with general practitioners, specialists and radiologists to provide the best service to their patients.
How does Osteopathy work?
Osteopathy does not concentrate only on the problem area, but uses manual techniques to balance all the body systems, and to provide overall good health. It is based on the principle that a person’s wellbeing depends on their bones, ligaments, and connecting tissue functioning smoothly together.
Our training and experience enables us to assess many patients as they walk into the clinic. Gentle stretches and movements of the problem area will then point to the problem’s cause.
Your Osteopath will then use the highly trained method of touch called palpation to improve the function of the joints, ligaments, and tissues.

History
Osteopathy is a well established method of treatment that was founded and developed by Dr Andrew Taylor Still M.D., in the United States in 1874. Still contended that the body contains the inherent capacity to battle illness.
The work of the Osteopath is to adjust the body from the abnormal to the normal; then the abnormal condition gives place to the normal and health is the result of the normal condition.
Dr A.T. Still
Early Osteopathy went against conventional medical movements which included bloodletting and prescribing poisonous chemicals such as mercury. Fortunately Osteopathy is now complimentary to other medical treatments.
